Missing Boater Returns: Former Boca Financial Adviser was Listed as Missing Two Weeks Ago

By Matt Morgan, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

A boater who went missing about two weeks ago has returned to his home and admitted that he orchestrated his disappearance to escape his legal problems, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office.   Richard Ohrn, 44, went missing off the coast of Boca Raton on March 31 after renting a boat in Broward County. He anchored the boat in the ocean, used a small inflatable boat to get back to land and drove to Albany, Ga., where he stayed at a rental house, sheriff ’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.   A passing boater found the abandoned vessel drifting 6 miles south of Boynton Beach Inlet, 2 miles from shore.   Ohrn had purchased a truck weeks prior and parked it at Pioneer Park to use as his transportation when he returned to land.

A former financial adviser, Ohrn is facing an investigation from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, and the Florida Office of Financial Regulation denied his request for a broker license in December. The FINRA complaint alleges that Ohrn forged 12 signatures from a total of four clients.   He is accused of forging customer signatures between January 2010 and March 2011 when he worked for Chase Investment Services Corp., according to a complaint filed by FINRA. Ohrn was terminated from Wells Fargo in 2012 after the allegations came to light.   The complaint also asserts that he changed the addresses of two clients to the bank branches where he worked in order to withdraw more than $15,000 from their accounts, the complaint said.   Both customers were in their 80s.

In November, the Florida Office of Financial Regulation filed an application to deny Ohrn’s broker license, which he did not appeal.   The license was officially denied in December.   He had applied for the license in July 2014, but the Office of Financial Regulation moved to deny the application after the FINRA complaint was filed.
